Defend Myanmar Democracy to Officially Petition Meta to Take Action Against Military-Controlled Facebook Pages
Defend Myanmar Democracy (DMD) has announced that it will formally send a letter to Meta (Facebook’s parent company), urging the company to take action against Facebook pages controlled by Myanmar’s military regime.
“In 2021, Facebook announced that it had removed and banned Myanmar military accounts and military-controlled state media pages from its platform. So why are some of these pages still active today?” DMD questioned.
According to DMD, several pages under the control of the junta — including those of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, the Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development — are continuing to operate on Facebook. These pages are allegedly being used to spread propaganda, legitimize the regime’s authority, and generate revenue for the military.
“These pages clearly violate Meta’s own policies, which prohibit content and accounts linked to the military regime. Defend Myanmar Democracy will be sending an official letter to Meta, urging immediate enforcement actions,” the group stated.
